Listen to the wails on “Middle Man.” It’s the sound of a star being born. But Britt’s approach is much more accessible, guitar-driven pop and gorgeous vocals. The young singer and songwriter at times sounds like Tori Amos on her five-song EP. Opener “Mystic Signs” will have you instantly hooked. Frontman Mikey Drag leads his band through eight songs that capture a moment in time and still feel relevant. The debut album from Flower Graves is awash in ’60s psychedelia.

This is a band who knows how to work together. A sea of guitars, drums and bass meld beautifully with Carlos Sanchez’s vocals.

“Lost in Lima” is an instantly listenable collection of jangly, melodic pop-rock. It’s a testament to the band that they continue to evolve on record. Houston quartet Young Mammals has been at it for roughly a decade. “I am a God/I am the one/I am the Earth, Moon and the sun,” he boasts. It’s aggressive and explicit, a declaration of his sharp-as-a-blade skills. With five songs clocking in at 13 minutes, this is arguably his strongest release to date. Guilla said he “needed to come back hard” on this EP, the follow-up to 2018’s “Crunchy Roll and Chill.” Mission accomplished. This is a somber, serious album that’s impossible to ignore. Classifying it as Americana or folk seems too narrow. It hooks you from the brief intro and is anchored by the majestic vocals of Mason Lankford. This band of brothers and one friend deliver an evocative album about love and drugs, regret and rage. Elsewhere, the Kiddettes team up with Tee Vee and The Suffers singer Kam Franklin to keep the people dancing.ĥ. “CYCLE” sounds like a radio hit, and “P.S.A.” is a collaboration with inimitable pop singer STOO. Synth-pop duo Space Kiddettes captures the quirky energy of its live shows on “Deadspace.” It’s the best yet from Trent Lira and Devin Will, thanks in part to mixing and mastering from local recording guru John Allen Stephens. Fatts also enlists a cadre of standout features from See Green, Anti Lilly, D Black and Kidricc James. Themes of believing in yourself are peppered throughout the album, and he’s aided by urgent, bristling production. Paul Wall and Big Pokey show up for their own “Sittin’ Sidewayz,” but the rest is inspired instrumental takes on Scarface, Z-Ro and Bun B.īigg Fatts rattles the Houston rap cage on “Table Manna,” a collection of ferocious songs that showcase his lyrical prowess and pointed delivery. But that’s part of what makes this project, featuring big band arrangements of Houston hip-hop songs, so effective.

in conducting from the University of Houston. He’s a jazz musician, a suit-and-tie kinda guy, with a Ph.D. Henry Darragh, at first look, is the last person you’d probably expect to be entrenched in Houston’s hip-hop scene. “Doc Loc and the Swangers,” Doc Loc and the Swangers She weaves sweet, ethereal vocals amid the synths, creating a sound that both holds you at arm’s length and draws you in.Ģ. Teresa Vicinanza, who records as Tee Vee, has a musical energy that runs alternately hot and cold on “Tempest.” It’s a balance she played with on 2017’s terrific “Soft Spot.” But here, Tee Vee finds a perfect synergy, creating a fully realized collection of elastic pop songs.
